Product Range
We now have a range of four dual certified, Fairtrade and organic filter/cafetière coffees for you to enjoy:
+ Fairtrade Organic Espresso
There were two main starting points for our Fairtrade Organic espresso blend: firstly we wanted to support smallholder coffee growers who were passionate about coffee, and secondly, the blend had to taste fantastic.
There are five different coffees that form the blend, and without giving you too many of our blenders secrets we use the following coffees:
- Semi-washed arabicas from the Tunas Indah group near Lake Toba in Northern Sumatra.
- Washed arabicas from the Association de Campesinos Indigenas Arhuacos in the Cauca district of Colombia.
- Washed arabicas COCLA co-operative from the Andean region of Quillambamba in Peru.
- Washed arabicas from Oromia co-operative coffee from the Western Ethiopian region of Limu.
- Indian Robusta from Wayanad Social Service Society in Kerala, Southern India.
When these coffees are brought together and given a dark roast, the result is a well-rounded, smooth and chocolately coffee that’s rich and not bitter. The very high quality semi-washed coffees from Indonesia arabicas bring rich dark chocolate notes, the Ethiopian coffee a little fruit and the South American coffees a subtle nuttiness. The addition of a little premium robusta adds 'bite' on the aftertaste – needed for espresso-based drinks taken with milk.
+ Fairtrade Organic Medium Roast
Our Fairtrade Organic Medium roast is one of our coffee buyers favourite blends in our range. We blend the following coffees to a special recipe and give them a medium to medium-dark roast:
- Washed arabicas from the Association de Campesinos Indigenas Arhuacos in the Cauca district of Colombia.
- Washed arabicas COCLA co-operative from the Andean region of Quillambamba in Peru.
- Washed arabicas from Oromia co-operative coffee from the Western Ethiopian region of Limu.
The point in the roasting cycle to where we roast this blend allows the lively frutiness and citric character of the coffees to shine through, whilst also developing a little more body than a standard medium roast along with notes of caramel and hazelnuts. A difficult balancing act to manage, but one that our craft roaster John has down to a tee. Perfect black or white at any time of the day.
+ Fairtrade Organic Colombian
Colombia produces many different styles of coffee across its coffee growing regions. For our Fairtrade Organic Colombian we source coffee from the Association de Campesinos Indigenas Arhuacos in the Cauca district. Supporting coffee growers through Fairtrade in this district of Colombia helps the farmers develop a sustainable income through a legal crop rather than being tied in a cycle of growing illegal coca leaves.
Cauca coffees are known for being well balanced. Lively, with a pleasant citric fruitiness on the aftertaste, and our Fairtrade organic Colombian is a perfect example of this. It has a silky smooth texture underlying these flavours and is ideal as an all day coffee.
+ Fairtrade and Organic Decaffeinated
It’s important for us that our decaffeinated coffee starts life as top quality washed arabica coffee. Because of this, a little of the COCLA co-operative Peruvian arabica we use in our Fairtrade organic espresso and medium roasts gets sent to be decaffeinated. Retaining the great taste of this Peruvian coffee is as it undergoes the decaffeination process very important, and we think the ‘Supercritical CO2’ process retains the most flavour. After all, if you don’t want the caffeine you definitely want the flavour. This process works by taking carbon dioxide gas to very high pressures so that it behaves like a liquid. When you bring this into contact with coffee all the caffeine and none of the flavour is gently removed through osmosis.
When we roast our decaffeinated organic Fairtrade Peru we give a medium dark roast to enhance the body, develop a smooth texture on the mouthfeel, and bring out it’s rich hazelnut character.
